Heartbroken by the recent tragedy where at least 12 women, children and men lost their lives when a boat carrying people seeking sanctuary in the UK sank in the Channel off Le Portel on the French northern coast.

In response to this tragic incident, Caroline O’Connor, Chief Executive Officer of Migrant Help, said:

“We are deeply saddened by the recent tragedy in the Channel off Le Portel on the French northern coast, where at least 12 lives were lost, as they attempted to reach safety in the UK. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy. This devastating incident serves as a reminder of the risks so many vulnerable people are forced to take in their search for safety and protection.

At Migrant Help, we are dedicated to supporting people affected by displacement and exploitation. Every life lost is a failure of our collective responsibility to protect those most in need—people fleeing conflict, persecution, and unimaginable hardships. This tragedy highlights the urgent need to provide safe and legal routes for those seeking asylum.

We must ensure that this disaster does not become just another statistic. Safe routes to asylum are needed, not only for the protection of vulnerable people but also to help dismantle the criminal smuggling networks that prey on desperation. Enforcement alone will not address the root causes that drive people to make these perilous crossings. We join other charities in urging the government to take immediate action.

Many of those attempting to cross the Channel are fleeing from war, persecution, and violence. They do not make these dangerous journeys lightly, but out of sheer desperation, often believing they have no other option. We have a moral duty to respond with compassion and provide safe alternatives that prevent more tragic loss of life.”
