We are currently looking for a Press and Communications Officer to join our warm, friendly and supportive Communications team, on a fixed term contract until 26 November 2025.


As part of the communications team, you will play an important role in amplifying the charity’s voice in the media, by implementing a range of public relations activities and campaigns, including media engagement. With the Public Relations and Communications Manager, you will both generate proactive media output - pitching story ideas and content to identified target outlets - and respond and react to media requests. You will also work closely with the other members of the team on a range of activities, including stakeholder relationships, partnership working within the sector, a range of campaigns, always keeping in mind the need to keep the voices of our clients at the forefront of our activities.

As the Press and Communications Officer your duties would include:

  • Work closely with the Public Relations and Communications Manager to implement the organisation’s public relations activities and campaigns
  • Plan and pitch appropriate stories to identified media outlets
  • Respond to ad hoc press enquiries by telephone and email
  • Draft press releases
  • Maintain press contact lists

 

  • Establish good working relationships with key journalists and media outlets
  • Give Migrant Help clients a voice across all communications activities
  • Contribute to the implementation of Migrant Help’s communications strategies
  • Increase the organisation’s visibility while protecting and enhancing its reputation and promoting its work, values and key messages
  • Contribute to effective internal and external communications for Migrant Help, including media and supporter engagement
  • Provide support in other areas of communications and with events as required
  • Promote equality, diversity and employee rights and obligations in all actions and activities
  • Demonstrate professional behaviour at all times
  • Contribute to the overall success of the organisation in accordance with Migrant Help’s aims and objectives

The experience and skills you need:

  • Demonstrable experience working in public relations, marketing, journalism or communications – preferably in the charity sector
  • Proven experience of success in pitching and placing stories in the media – preferably at a national level
  • Ability to summarise complex information in lively and compelling ways for different channels and audiences
  • Highly motivated with an interest in communications
  • Ability to influence, persuade and negotiate
  • Excellent at networking and making new contacts and connections (e.g., journalists, editors, other sector organisations)

 

What else to expect:

  • Our working hours are Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm.
  • This is a homebased role, however on occasion you will need to attend meetings at our London or Dover office.
